Human Resources for Eye Health

In 2017, JOA provided a 4-year grant for a project to strengthen the capacity of five eye health training institutions in East Africa and to develop the College of Ophthalmology of Eastern, Central and Southern Africa (COECSA) training curriculum as the standard for residents. By the end of the project in 2020, more than 130 eye health professionals have benefitted from training.

Comprehensive Rural Eye Care in South Omo, Ethiopia

In 2018, JOA and The Clothworkers’ Foundation provided grants for a three-year project that expanded our eye care work in rural southern Ethiopia, with a focus on trachoma elimination. By the end of the project, over 736,000 doses of antibiotics had been administered to tackle infectious trachoma and over 2,400 surgeries had been carried out to address the painful, late stage of blinding trachoma.
