The Baltic Air Charter Association (BACA) – whose goal is to raise and maintain standards of conduct in the air charter market, chose Orbis as its Charity of the Year for 2016. This is the second time the organisation has leant their support to Orbis, having first supported them in 2005!

This time the organisation raised a brilliant £6,700 for Orbis’s work at their Spring Lunch and Excellence Awards events. Over 600 guests attended the two annual events and funds were raised through raffles and an auction, with prizes kindly donated by BACA members.

Orbis volunteer Ian Flaming talking at the BACA Awards 2017

During both events, long standing Orbis volunteer anaesthetist, Ian Fleming, addressed the audience, discussing his experience of training fellow anaesthetists within developing countries, specifically on board the Flying Eye Hospital. Having volunteered with Orbis 14 times, 11 on board the aircraft, he talked passionately about its role in providing training to eye health professionals so they can restore vision across Africa, Asia and Latin America.

Ian’s talks both received a very warm reaction from the BACA members, who have a clear interest in the role of aviation in helping to improve standards of eye care across the world.
