A London Marathon participant is comforted by her family and friends

Running for sight at the London Marathon 2019

Long-time Orbis supporter, Kathryn Benjamin, ran the London Marathon earlier this year for the fifth time! We asked her all about how she got in to running...

When did you first start running?

I first started running a few years ago, when I saw a sign at work for a free place on the Royal Parks Half for charity ... I had no idea what I was signing up for but it seemed too good an opportunity to miss. Then I got the running bug and kept signing up for more and more half marathons, until the only option was to go for the London marathon.

What is your favourite running song?

I have terrible taste in music, but I like a bit of Beyoncé in the middle, and then when it gets tough, I whack on a bit of Celine Dion ... nothing hypes you up more than a good power ballad!

What is your favourite running food?

Peanut butter!

Why did you choose to run the marathon for Orbis?

I love what the marathon stands for, it’s an epic effort - and achievement - to get over that finish line for everyone taking part. Everyone runs for something, whether it’s for a Personal Best, to cross the line dressed as Big Ben, or to support one of the many charities who have places on the run. The fact I get to run it for such an amazing charity makes the training so much more worth it.

I love the work that Orbis does, it truly changes lives, and that’s what keeps me going when it’s getting tough. Knowing that I’m helping make a difference to people’s lives is so rewarding. So even though I didn’t have the best race on the day, I’m proud of what I’ve achieved and who my fundraising efforts will help via Orbis.
