Did you know cataract is the leading cause of blindness in the world?

A cataract operation would be free to us on the NHS but thousands of people around the world do not have access to the eye care they need. With your help and a straightforward operation, that can take as little as 20 minutes, lives can be transformed.

In September 2020 we launched CatarAction by Orbis – a programme designed to give supporters a chance to be involved with our work each month. This initiative aims to save sight of people all over the world, and provide independence and freedom for people who are facing a lifetime of avoidable blindness.

At the time of the launch we had an incredible response and are so humbled to have our CatarAction supporters onboard – your contributions provide a brighter future for adults and children across the world.

Saliou (pictured above) from Cameroon was only three years old when he started struggling with his sight.

He couldn’t see very well when playing, and his parents noticed that his right eye would often slide sideways before focusing again. His eyesight became so bad that he ended up falling down the stairs at home, suffered from severe headaches and struggled to see the blackboard and write at school. He eventually dropped out of school because of his sight.

Saliou was referred to an Orbis-supported programme. It was here that he was confirmed as having cataract. His sight-restoring operation, a few weeks later, has transformed his future.

Once a little boy who had to stay indoors to keep safe, he now loves to get outside and play football with his friends. He has now returned to school, continuing his vital education.

If you would like to get involved and contribute a gift each month to treat cataracts, please visit CatarAction by Orbis today.
