Helping children see their future

In March last year, Orbis launched our See My Future appeal, with all donations during a three-month period being matched by the UK government.

Thanks to our fantastic supporters, we reached a total of £1.391 million with Gift Aid and match funding. The money you raised will help support our vital sight-saving work wherever it is needed most, whilst the money matched by the UK government is helping to expand Orbis’s childhood blindness project in Nepal, called REACH (Refractive Error Among Children).

As this latest project begins, our Vision for Zambia project, which was funded by our last ‘UK Aid Match’ appeal in 2015, comes to an end. Thanks to your support, since 2016 more than 99,000 children in the Copperbelt Province in Zambia have been screened for eye conditions for the first time, and more than 800 health professionals have been trained on eye health across 10 districts.

Crucially, alongside significant awareness raising in communities, an effective referral network has been put in place. This means that people throughout the Copperbelt Province in Zambia understand the importance of eye health and now know where to access services, including those in remote areas. If necessary, people with more complex eye conditions are now easily referred to the district and provincial hospitals for quality treatment.

We want to say a huge thank you to every one of our supporters who made both of these projects possible, and we look forward to keeping you updated on the success of REACH in Nepal.
