Orbis fundraiser Simon Speirs' family cycle London to Paris in his memory

The family of Orbis UK supporter Simon Speirs is taking on a London to Paris cycle challenge in his memory this weekend

Simon was a keen Orbis fundraiser who sadly passed away in 2017 during the Clipper Round the World Race. The team of six has designed their own cycle route, and will be setting off this Friday from London and arriving in Paris on Sunday.

Simon’s son Mike told us it feels appropriate as Simon loved cycling. Simon himself took on the London to Paris cycle challenge in 2008, and 10 years and one month later his four children and their partners will be following in his footsteps.

Mike explains: “We’re doing it in honour of him as he loved a challenge.”

The team has been training around London and Bristol to prepare for the more than 200 mile journey.

“I’m definitely excited – I love cycling anyway!” Mike says. “Some are a little nervous but it’s all within energy levels and fitness levels.”

And perhaps most importantly, what are they looking forward to most when they reach Paris? “A beer or glass of wine in the sun!”

They’ll certainly deserve it after all of their effort. If you want to support the team’s effort, please visit their VirginMoneyGiving page.

All of the money raised will be split between Orbis UK and Practical Action.
