A Routine Checkup Revealed a Hidden Threat to Duc's Sight

Right now, millions of people around the world are losing their sight, often without even knowing it.

Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness, yet sadly many people don’t know they have it until it’s too late. By 2040, it’s estimated that over 100 million people will be living with this sight-threatening condition.

While you can’t regain vision lost to glaucoma, the good news is that with early diagnosis and the right treatment, further damage can often be prevented. The trouble is, glaucoma usually has no obvious symptoms, which is why regular eye checks are so important. At your local optician, they may check for glaucoma by measuring the pressure inside your eyes with a puff of air, taking a photo of your eye, or testing your peripheral vision. If they notice any issues, they may refer you for further testing.

If you’re over 40 or have a family history of glaucoma, you could be higher risk – especially if you’re of African, Caribbean, or Asian descent. However, some people are also diagnosed at a young age. The good news is glaucoma can often be managed if caught early – and you can help by spreading awareness and ensuring you and your loved ones get regular eye checks. That’s why, this month, Orbis is shining a light on Glaucoma Awareness Month.

A Life Darkened by Glaucoma

In the UK, we're lucky to have access to regular eye tests, but many people in low- and middle-income countries don’t have the same opportunity for early detection and treatment.

Imagine struggling with your sight, not knowing what’s wrong, and feeling helpless as your world becomes harder to navigate.

This was the harsh reality for 18-year-old Duc from Vietnam, who was about to graduate when he noticed his vision deteriorating. Whilst most of his friends were celebrating their futures, Duc faced an uncertain one. With each passing day, his vision dimmed, and his hopes dwindled. Struggling with the pain and uncertainty, Duc made the decision to get the treatment he so desperately needed.

"My eyes became red, painful, heavy, and unusually sensitive to the dark and sunlight. Over time, these symptoms started recurring every week, making it really difficult for me to go about my daily life."

With the support of his family, Duc went to his local hospital, where he was shocked to learn that he had glaucoma – a condition mostly associated with old age. Despite being monitored and treated with medication, his symptoms didn’t go away.

A Struggle for Answers

"Whenever the symptoms appeared, I could barely do anything, and I had to go to hospital. The travelling and treatment have been very time consuming and expensive.".

Duc’s hope for the future was slipping away. That was until he met Dr. Bui Thi Van Anh, who was working with Orbis at Hanoi Medical University.

A New Hope: Meeting Dr. Bui Thi Van Anh

During his hospital examination, Duc had no idea his life was about to change. He was being examined by Dr. Bui Thi Van Anh, a doctor collaborating with Orbis to train local eye care professionals. Here, Duc found out he had secondary glaucoma - a serious condition that threatened his remaining vision and would need careful management.

Thanks to Dr. Bui Thi Van Anh’s expertise and her guidance at Thai Binh Eye Hospital, Duc’s treatment plan was urgently adjusted, offering him a renewed chance to manage his condition and protect his sight.

Life-Changing Results

The difference has been life-changing for Duc. After almost 3 months of his new treatment plan, Duc told Orbis “I haven’t had any symptoms since then. Now, I can work normally to support my family. I’m following the doctor’s advice to have my eyes checked every month”.
