Protecting Your Eyes This Bonfire Night: Bright Lights, Safe Sights

As Bonfire Night approaches, the skies will soon be filled with colour, light and sound. But behind the sparkle lies a real risk to our eyes.

Each year, thousands of people experience serious eye injuries from fireworks, most of them preventable. The eyes are incredibly delicate, and even a small spark or piece of debris can cause lasting damage.

Here’s how to enjoy the show safely and keep your sight protected, this Bonfire Night and beyond.

Why Your Eyes Are at Risk

Fireworks burn at extreme temperatures, releasing heat, debris and chemicals that can easily harm the eye. Even sparklers can reach over 1,500°C - that’s— hot enough to melt metal!

Quick Tips for Firework Eye Safety

  • Attend a professional display:
Public displays have safety zones and trained teams. It’s the easiest way to stay safe.
  • Protect your eyes:
Wear safety goggles if you’re handling fireworks or standing close by. Keep children at a safe distance
  • Stay smart if lighting fireworks at home:
         a. Use a clear, open space.
         b. Follow instructions carefully.
         c. Light fireworks at arm’s length and move away quickly.
         d. Never return to one that hasn’t gone off.
         e. Keep water or sand nearby
  • Handle sparklers with care:
Hold them at arm’s length, wear gloves, and never give them to very young children.
  • If an accident happens:
Don’t rub or rinse the eye. Cover it gently and get medical help immediately.

Everyday Eye-Health Reminders

Good habits go a long way:

  • Have regular eye checks.
  • Swap contacts for glasses on windy or smoky nights.
  • Avoid alcohol if lighting fireworks.
  • Teach children about eye safety early.
