Strabismus Training Project: Changing Children's Lives in Zambia

To mark Low Vision Awareness Month, Orbis is highlighting the critical need for accessible eye care around the world. Together, we can ensure that everyone has the chance to live life to the fullest.

Transforming Children’s Futures in Zambia

We’re reflecting on a new training initiative in Lusaka, Zambia, that's designed to provide life-changing eye care to children with strabismus. Local eye care professionals were equipped with vital skills to treat eye conditions on children that could lead to vision loss. This project advances our mission of believing in a world where everyone can access the eye care they need to thrive.

A Life-Changing Condition: Strabismus

Strabismus, a condition where the eyes are misaligned, can make it difficult for children to learn, play, and connect with others. It can affect their confidence and self-esteem. Without treatment, strabismus can lead to permanent vision loss and a lifetime of struggle. Vision loss then impacts a child’s ability to interact, learn, and grow: leading to isolation and anxiety. But, early treatment brings confidence and the chance for children to fully engage with the world around them.

But now, thanks to this training, hope has been restored for many children who now have a chance at a brighter future.

Building Stronger Communities Together

In partnership with the University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka, Zambia, our expert volunteers were equipping local doctors and surgeons with the skills to treat strabismus.

By training local doctors, we are ensuring that more children will receive the care they need, now and in the future. This project builds a foundation for better eye care in Zambia, leaving a legacy of hope.

Hands-on Training, Lasting Impact

With the support of Orbis volunteers – children's eye care expert Dr. Dan Neely and UK anaesthesiologist Dr. Simon Courtman – alongside Dr. Chimodzi Tembo, a local Zambian children’s eye doctor, this training focused on everything from screenings to surgeries. This hands-on approach ensures lasting, impactful change.
