Thakur getting her eyes examined

How a pair of ruby coloured glasses changed Thakur’s life

In Siliguri, West Bengal, India, Thakur, like many children, had trouble reading at night because of poor vision. She sat in the second row at school, as close to the board as possible, just to make out the letters.

“When the letters are small on the board in the classroom, I ask my friend to help read it out loud to me”

Constantly relying on others for help affected Thakur’s confidence and made her feel isolated in the classroom. Her dreams of excelling in her studies felt distant, especially as she struggled to keep up with her peers.

Refractive error in the UK is very common, affecting around 34 million people. But we luckily have the services needed to treat it. Diagnosis involves an eye screening and a test, and the issue can be easily corrected with a simple pair of glasses.

But for those without easy access to care, getting that help isn’t as simple. It’s a reminder of how important it is to push for better eye care for everyone so more children like Thakur can have better access to eyecare.

A Life-Changing Screening

At the age of 13, Thakur transferred to a new school where Orbis had implemented the REACH programme (Refractive Error Amongst Children). One of the key components of the programme is that all new students receive a vision screening to detect undiagnosed refractive errors.

Thakur was identified during one screening as having a high refractive error – something that had been affecting her for years. This screening opened the door to life-changing support for Thakur and her future.

Your support can make a lasting difference in the lives of children who need it most.

The Gift of Clear Vision

After being identified with a refractive error, Thakur and her mother were referred to an Orbis-supported vision centre in Bagdogra, India for further exams. There, Thakur was measured for corrective lenses and given the exciting opportunity to choose a pair of ruby-coloured frames – a moment that made her feel seen and valued.

Within a few days, her glasses were ready. Finally, Thakur could begin her journey toward clear vision and a brighter future.

“I will wear these glasses now because they help me see clearly.”

Ongoing Care

Thakur and her mother were asked to return every six months for check-ups at the vision centre, to ensure that her vision is regularly monitored, and the glasses continue to meet her needs.

A Bright Future Ahead

At school, Thakur’s passion for history has been inspired by her favourite teacher, and now, with her newfound ability to see clearly, she is determined to pursue her dreams of becoming a historian.
