Your questions about Our Fundraisers

Orbis UK has trained professional fundraisers who raise funds for, and awareness of, our sight-saving work. You may meet one of them at shopping centres or train stations or on the door step.

The work our face-to-face fundraisers do is vital to our work to eliminate avoidable blindness around the world. It is a really cost effective way of raising funds to support Orbis UK’s work to end avoidable blindness.

How Do Our Fundraisers Work? Frequently Asked Questions

What work will the fundraising support?

The vital funds raised by our face-to-face fundraisers will help to protect people's sight around the world - wherever the need is greatest. We aim to build strong and sustainable eye care systems globally that put treatment and prevention within reach for all.

Why do Orbis UK fundraisers not accept cash donations?

Our fundraisers will never ask for or accept a cash donation. They will only ever sign-up people to a recurring regular donation and the form is completed on a smart device of your own via a secure link keeping your details secure, which is much safer for you and the fundraiser.

What happens after I sign up to a regular donation?

You will receive a confirmation email with the date of your first payment the day you sign up. The first donation will be taken on the day when you sign up. Within a couple of weeks, we'll send you a confirmation letter of your regular donation. You will also receive a verification call checking everything was explained to you correctly. We'll then keep you regularly updated about our work and the impact of your donations.

Why does Orbis UK use face-to-face fundraisers?

As a charity, Orbis has a responsibility to cost effectively raise funds for our vital work around the world. Face-to-face fundraising is a vital income stream for the organisation and it’s a cost-effective way to bring new supporters on board.

The funds raised by face-to-face fundraisers play a vital role in our fight against avoidable blindness. They help to introduce new people to our mission and inspire them to engage further and support us financially.

In addition to the much-needed funding this method provides, it is also a great opportunity to engage on a personal level with people from a diverse range of communities across the UK.

How does Orbis keep the public and our fundraisers safe?

We expect the highest standards from our fundraisers and provide them with bespoke training to ensure they are interacting with the public in the best way.

We monitor our fundraising campaigns closely to ensure that our fundraisers adhere to the Code of Fundraising practice as set out by the Fundraising Regulator, the door-to-door fundraising rulebook as set out by the Chartered Institute of Fundraising, and all relevant legislation.

How does Orbis make sure your fundraising is ethical and doesn’t target those in vulnerable circumstances?

Orbis is committed to treating those who are in vulnerable circumstances fairly and respectfully. We have robust training, policies and procedures in place to protect anyone in potentially vulnerable circumstances from inappropriate requests for donations, and to ensure supporters and members of the public are treated with empathy and respect throughout our face-to-face fundraising activities.

Our agency partners are contractually obliged to adhere to these standards and procedures, and we work together to ensure the measures are adhered to through extensive quality monitoring and regular training.

How do I know an Orbis face-to-face fundraiser is genuine?
